Setsoné

It’s named Setsoné which means Grandmother in Chipewyan, my native language. Indigenous family structure is beautiful and full of love. Children are not just raised by their mom and dad, they are raised by the entire extended family. Childcare is never just the responsibility of the parents, it is instead shared among grandparents and aunts and uncle and cousins and siblings. This is what makes our families so close and so strong. In particular, most of the strength in a native family comes from Setsoné. She is the matriarch of the family and is always asked upon for guidance and leadership. She is also a vital part of her grandchildren’s lives, as Setsoné often acts as a third parent.
