Denedzie - A Persons' Heart

This artwork was inspired by my first year in medical school. All throughout my first year, I felt lonely. Growing up in the north, surrounded by the land and family, I was always a member of a community, and I was always surrounded with love. This made the transition to medical school, and city life, very difficult. In first year I spent most of my time feeling alienated, detached from my environment and community, and generally displaced. I remember this one moment when I was studying for my cardiology exam, looking at a diagram of the heart, where I reflected on how much our veins look like rivers. This led to me thinking about how much our lung bronchioles look like tree roots, and how the interconnectedness of living beings stems from the interconnectedness of our own organ systems. This idea has stuck with me and has been a solace throughout my medical education. I am not away from the land, and I am not away from my community because my community made me, the rivers of my childhood have fed the veins in my body, and therefore it will always be within me. I made this artwork to depict this idea in the hopes it will solace to another person navigating the colonial world of Western medicine.
